Ain't Maine Grand . . .?

A picture is worth a 1000 words . . . .

Podcasts: Is audio good enough . . .?

We're off an running in the first week of EME6415 with a diverse cohort that should provide a foundation for a great semester. The first area of study is the use of podcasts for educational / training purposes. Our first assignment is to develop an audio-only podcast that highlights the benefits of such an artifact.

On a side note, my vacation in Maine is going well. Yesterday was absolutely PERFECT. My son, Stuart, took me and Carol with girlfriend Anna out on Eggemoggin Reach down to the Wooden Boat School and back (see attached photo).

Day two Down East . . .

I'm sitting in my van outside the local library in Brooklin, Maine while a light rain is falling. It's been a relaxing day running errands with Carol, son Stuart, and his girlfriend Anna, replete with a great pizza from Finelli's. Checking in on the cohort of 17 for EME6415 and am awaiting what looks to be a great class.

The next chapter . . . EME6415

EME6415, Courseware Development, with Alan Jeong starts Monday while I'm Maine. I started the Open & Distance Learning curriculum in Maine two summers ago with Dr. Jeong and I find myself coming full circle. Should be a lot of fun as I adjust from a crash 6-week summer course with Dr. Dennen.

Headed to Maine . . . . !!!!#(#(#

I'm headed to Maine on Saturday to join my wife to celebrate our anniversary on 8/26. She's been in Maine since early July and it's time for some respite from this suffocating heat in Jacksonville. Plan to chill, kayak, consume a lot of blueberries, and catch up with Carol and our eldest, Stuart - as well as meet his girlfriend, Anna. Cheers!

Better watch out . . .

Logging In Sick

IMAGE SOURCE / CORBIS

When 21-year-old Australian call-center worker Kyle Doyle logged onto Facebook and updated his status one day in October 2008, he must have been as drunk as his message said he was. Apparently recovering from a night of hard boozing, Doyle wrote: "not going to work, f--- it i'm still trashed SICKIE WOO." Despite countless stories warning people that Facebook is not in the business of keeping things a secret, Doyle inadvertently alerted his employer to his fake illness and was busted by the human resources department. An e-mail exchange between Doyle and an HR representative circulated the Web — though Doyle's mom claimed it was a hoax — and the young man was told he would need to furnish a doctor's note or lose pay for the missed day. When Doyle argued the company had no right to dock his pay without reason, the HR rep simply e-mailed him a screen grab of his own status update. The company has declined to comment about the validity of the e-mail exchange but did say the matter was under investigation. In the meantime, the alleged work dodger has become a Facebook legend; users have created several groups to support him.

Credit Unions and Web 2.0 . . .

Here's a perspective on how credit union's might engage in Web 2.0:

Time reflects on Facebook . . .

The May 31st issue of Time chronicled the social networking site Facebook that is redefining privacy according to the authors. A quick quote starts to put this phenomenon in perspective:

"Sometime in the next few weeks, Facebook will officially log its 500 millionth active citizen. If the website were granted terra firma, it would be the world's third largest country by population, two-thirds bigger than the U.S. More than 1 in 4 people who browse the Internet not only have a Facebook account but have returned to the site within the past 30 days."

Week Six - going, going, . . . . .GONE!!

Hard to believe Web 2.0's Wild Ride (an E Ticket for those who remember those at Disney) is just about done. What was done this last week you ask??

Posted comments to this week's prompts;
Finished and posted my produsage paper and site;
Blogged on this site;
Visited all the produsage products from the entire cohort;
Reflected on how to apply what I learned both personally and professionally; and finally
Had a great time. Best to everyone! Stay safe and in touch.

A nostalgic look back . . . and Week 6

Reflect on what you have learned in the class and how you will use it professionally as both a lifelong learner and an instructional systems professional (or whatever field you’re in).

There are so many learning moments from this "compressed" ride! First, I have a real appreciation for what constitutes Web 2.0 - a lot!! I've been exposed to a wide array of technologies including Blogger, Ning, Netvibes, Citulike, Yammer, and Stumbleupon to mention a few. It's also obvious that we're still not there as to buy-in in for Web 2.0's utility in education. In fact it appears that private industry is much farther along embracing these technologies. My sense is once the vast majority of society is composed of those who grew up with networked computing, acceptance will skyrocket. Technology will continue to get better and at a mind-numbing pace. I also learned there's etiquette and appropriate ways to engage in this social engineering world we're engaged in. It's not for everyone; however, the benefits appear to far outweigh any downside. Finally, I've witnessed how one can get sucked into life on the net. We need to be careful not caste aside F2F interactions. This has been a great experience and I'll definitely mine opportunities to apply Web 2.0 and beyond into my personal and professional life. I hope to be in academia here locally at UNF, JU, or FSCJ in a distance learning / IS role as a leader and practitioner. Thanks for the great ride Vanessa!

PS - the photo is me (on the left) at 19 with my good friend Dan Derango at YMCA Camp Wewa in Apopka, FL outside of Orlando. We reconnected via Facebook and on 8/6 met after 30+ years at the camp's 60th anniversary celebration.

Facebook and reconnecting . . .

It's been a crazy week at work. Bright spot was taking Wednesday off. Which leads me to one of the benefits of social networking, specifically Facebook. I recently got back in touch on FB with several friends from 30 years ago from a YMCA summer camp we were counselors together at. Ironically, the 60th anniversary was celebrated yesterday and I was able to attend and reconnect. It was a great get together. While simplistic, FB is powerful and if managed properly, can be a conduit to great reconnections.
